The Cooplands Story started in 1932 when Mrs. Alice Jenkinson opened a shop
at 33 Hallgate, Doncaster, to sell home made cakes and chocolates.
Over the years the company expanded its product range and in addition to bakery
lines it became renowned for cooked meats, delicatessen lines and in-store
butchery units.
The company now has 75 shops across South and East Yorkshire and also
stretching down into Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
They have 1 main manufacturing site located in Doncaster.

At their central manufacturing site, they have gas ovens & water intensive areas with no idea of specific consumption. Spiraling energy costs and their commitment to the environment made a monitoring system and sub metering project the cornerstone of their Energy Management strategy.
Cooplands first introduction to Energy Monitoring was at the exhibition at the NEC in 2008 and chose our wireless system for its flexibility, ease of installation and a comprehensive software package. An initial survey was carried out an to assess current metering and specify for where new sub meters could be installed to monitor key strategic locations. Eight initial new metering points were selected to report on perceived energy hungry areas. The focus was on gas ovens, water in two areas and the Tray wash (gas and water). A further survey to test the radio frequency signal around the site was and then the system and the new meters were ordered. Installation of the new meters was shortly followed by commissioning of the full system.
By having the sub meters and the energy monitoring system it has enabled Cooplands to have a detailed picture of what is
being used and where. With a proactive approach allied with weekly and monthly analysis of the data Cooplands were able
to identify areas of wastage and unecessary consumption.
Unusual trends and patterns were interrogated in order to establish if these were down to increased production or other
factors. Gas usage from the now metered ovens was put under close scrutiny and their operation managed closely.
Initial savings in gas consumption alone have totalled £1,400 a month, giving immediate payback that will cover the
capital outlay for the system inside the first year of its installation.
Additional savings are also being made with water consumption reduced by 20% since areas like the tray wash became
visible.
Alan Jaques, Production Operations Manager for Cooplands says: “We have experienced massive benefits from the system and we have been able to reduce consumption
and save money that will make the system pay for itself, resulting in anticipated savings of £30,000 per annum.
Cooplands are a very typical application. They were
working with manual Primary meter readings only, and although aware of possible excessive energy consumption, they
did not have the profile data to prove and identify exactly where, when and why!”
By sub metering key parts of their factory and using our Energy Monitoring software, they have been able to
monitor, manage and save!”
